With over 14 years of executive protection and armed security experience combined with a 2nd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience, JJ brings a wealth of knowledge and real world applications to the training cadre. He has also completed a myriad of executive protection, tactical firearms and instructor certification courses.

JJ’s range of experience stretches across more than 80 countries while providing protection for CEO’s, celebrities, and dignitaries at various events such as the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, award shows, movie premieres, and executive appearances.

Furthermore, JJ Pugsley has taught ground fighting tactics to law enforcement and military personnel. His ability to articulate his knowledge of the field has been augmented by instructor development; he is currently an NRA pistol instructor and qualified as a sniper instructor.

JJ Pugsley’s classes with the Ronin Training Institute do not just emphasize the physical side training and defense, but the psychological side as well. He is a registered psychotherapist in the state of Colorado, and has amassed a great deal of experience helping individuals develop a mindset that can protect them in the most traumatic situations. This knowledge is especially beneficial for his classes in Women’s Self Defense and Children Anti-Abduction.

JJ Pugsley’s classes focus on the concentric rings of security and how to prevent an attack from occurring. An attack involves three variables — a victim, an attacker, and an opportunity. If you are able to remove one of the three elements then you can effectively prevent an attack from occurring. While you cannot always remove the threat of an attacker, you can remove the opportunity for an attack with proper education and training.

As JJ contends, routine is the enemy of security. He helps individuals hone their situational awareness skills so that they can be more confident with the way they carry themselves. The psychological education enables individuals to develop actionable intelligence so that they can defend themselves during life-threatening situations or prevent them from occurring altogether.

In addition to his work with the Ronin Training Institute, JJ Pugsley continues to compete professional in Jiu-Jitsu events with the Fight to Win Promotions organization. He is currently sponsored by Bad Boy Brands, joining their elite pro team in 2016.

JJ Pugsley is a graduate of Argosy University and the University of the Rockies, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in psychology. He was inspired to educate himself in psychology from a human perspective after watching good friends in the military go through TBI (traumatic brain injury) and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). JJ is currently pursuing a doctorate in Neuropsychology to offer support that many veterans are not receiving. He hopes to eventually open a non-profit, privately-funded, clinic to treat veterans with PTSD for free as an alternative to the Veteran Affairs Hospital.
